The Gatornationals are traditionally the first event on the NHRA schedule where the Pro Modified cars compete. This season, the multitude of Chevrolet vehicles dominated the racing at Gainesville, Fla. Twenty teams were on hand with just 16 qualifying slots available. Thirteen of the qualified cars were Chevys.

Multi-time Pro Modified national event winner Von Smith drove his Howard Moon-tuned Al-Anabi Racing 1969 Camaro to the win on March 17.

Smith defeated Chip King in a match-up between Smith’s supercharged entry and King’s turbocharged Hemi-powered ’69 Dodge Daytona. It was Smith’s fourth NHRA final round and veteran King’s first.

Al-Anabi racer Mike Castellana in his Reher-Morrison powered nitrous oxide-injected 1970 Camaro led all qualifiers with a 5.884 at 246.89 mph. His qualifying effort was the fifth quickest quarter-mile Elapsed Time in history and the fastest speed ever for a nitrous assisted Pro Mod.  (Adam Cranmer photo)
