Johnson leads the way in AAA Texas 500

Jimmie Johnson won his fourth race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) season Sunday, Nov. 2, at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) as the Chevrolet SS took the top two finishing positions, and three of the top-five, in a wild and unpredictable AAA Texas 500.

Johnson, the defending and six-time NSCS champion, took the lead on the second attempt at a green-white-checkered finish to win in the fall at Texas for the third straight year, and the fourth time in his career.

Giving Team Chevy a one-two finish was Harvick, who made a run from fourth to second in the final green-white-checkered run. Jamie McMurray, No. 1 McDonald’s Chevrolet SS, finished fifth to give the Chevrolet SS three of the top-five finishing positions.

Four Team Chevy drivers led at least one lap with Johnson leading a race-high 191 laps. The Chevrolet SS led a total of 257 laps.

The finish has major implications in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. With one race remaining in the third of four elimination rounds, Newman and Gordon are in the unofficial top-four in points. The four highest-ranking drivers after next week’s race in Phoenix advance to the Championship Round in two weeks at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Harvick’s runner-up finish Sunday places him eighth in points.
